What a sediment water filter does and where it goes

A sediment water filter removes suspended solids: sand, silt, clay, flakes of rust and pipe scale. It does nothing about anything dissolved in the water, which means it cannot fix hardness, taste, iron in solution or bacteria. Its real job is protective. Everything downstream of it, from the softener resin to the RO membrane to the aerators on your faucets, lasts longer and works properly because the grit stopped here.

What counts as sediment, and where it comes from

On a private well the sediment is usually formation material: fine sand and silt drawn in through the screen, plus clay after heavy rain if the well is shallow or poorly sealed. On a municipal supply it is more often disturbed pipe scale and rust that arrives after a main break, a hydrant flush or work in the street. Either way it is particulate, meaning it is carried by the water rather than dissolved in it, and it can be separated mechanically. Iron is the case that confuses people: dissolved iron passes straight through a sediment filter and only becomes filterable once it has oxidized into visible orange particles.

Cartridge types and how they behave

Spun polypropylene cartridges are graded through their depth, so they hold a lot of dirt before the pressure drops, and they are the usual choice on wells that produce steadily. Pleated cartridges present a much larger surface area in the same housing, load more slowly on lightly silted water, and some are washable for a few cycles. String-wound cartridges sit between the two and handle coarser material well. A backwashing sediment tank replaces cartridges entirely by flushing its bed on a schedule, which suits heavy, continuous sediment where changing cartridges every few weeks would be intolerable.

Choosing a rating, and the pressure trade-off

Filters are sold in graded micron ratings, and finer is not automatically better. A cartridge fine enough to catch everything will also plug quickly, and a plugged filter starves the whole house of pressure. The standard approach on a dirty well is to stage it: a coarse cartridge first to take the bulk of the load, then a finer one to polish, so the cheap coarse filter absorbs most of the work. Nominal and absolute ratings also mean different things, with absolute being the stricter claim, and that distinction matters when the filter is protecting a UV lamp that needs genuinely clear water to work.

Where it goes in the treatment train

The sediment filter belongs first, at the point of entry, before the softener, the iron filter, the carbon and the UV. Putting it anywhere else means the equipment you were trying to protect takes the grit instead. Fit it with isolation valves either side and a pressure gauge before and after, because the difference between those two gauges is the only honest indicator of when the cartridge is spent. Does a sediment filter remove iron?

Only iron that has already oxidized into visible particles. Clear water that turns orange after standing carries dissolved iron, which passes straight through and needs an oxidizing iron filter instead.

How do I know when to change the cartridge?

Falling pressure through the house is the practical signal. Gauges either side of the housing make it precise, since a growing gap between them means a loading cartridge.

Will a sediment filter make my water taste better?

Not by itself. Taste and odor come from dissolved compounds like chlorine, which need carbon. A sediment filter only removes what is suspended.

Can I wash and reuse a cartridge?

Pleated cartridges can often be rinsed a few times before they lose performance. Spun and string-wound cartridges trap dirt through their depth and are not practically cleanable.
