How to get rid of sediment in well water for good

Sediment in well water is filtered easily enough. Getting rid of it, in the sense the question usually means, requires knowing why the well is producing solids at all, because a well that has recently started making sand is telling you something about itself that a filter will quietly hide while the pump wears out.

Find out why first

A well that always made a little fine silt is one thing. A well that has newly started producing coarse sand has a cause: a failed or wrongly sized screen, a pump set too close to the bottom of the borehole and drawing from the sediment layer, over pumping beyond what the aquifer can sustain, or a formation beginning to collapse. Each of those degrades the borehole and abrades the pump continuously. Have the well assessed before designing filtration around the output.

The staged answer, in order

On coarse sand, a centrifugal separator goes first, spinning grit out with no media to consume and a nearly constant pressure drop. Then a backwashing media tank for the bulk of the finer material, cleaning itself to drain rather than needing cartridges. Then a coarse cartridge, then a fine one if genuinely required. Each stage exists so the next is not overwhelmed, and skipping straight to a fine cartridge on sandy water produces a filter consumed in days and a house that has lost pressure.

The other sources people miss

Not all sediment comes from the aquifer. A pressure tank that has never been drained accumulates a layer of silt that stirs up whenever demand is heavy. Old galvanized pipework sheds rust flakes that look exactly like well sediment and originate entirely inside the house. A water heater full of settled deposit releases it in slugs. If the sediment appears at some fixtures and not others, or only on hot water, the well is not the source and no amount of filtration at the entry point will help.

Test while you are at it

Visible sediment is a prompt to check what is not visible. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so nothing has been tested on your behalf, and a well that has started producing solids may also have a new route in for surface contamination.
