What the membrane is doing
Household pressure pushes water against a semipermeable film that passes water molecules far more readily than dissolved salts, metals and larger organic molecules. What you give up to get it
A point-of-use system sends water to drain to make water, refills its small tank slowly, and delivers a thin stream from a dedicated faucet rather than the main tap. The water tastes flat to some people because the dissolved minerals that carry flavor are gone. It also does nothing for the rest of the house: scale still forms in the water heater and the shower, because only the water passing that one faucet is treated.
When something else is the better buy
If the complaint is chlorine taste alone, a good carbon block does the job for less money and less waste. If the complaint is scale, a softener or a conditioner is the correct machine and reverse osmosis is not. Vendors publish capacity and flow figures on their own product pages, so compare stages, membrane rating and daily production against the problem you actually measured rather than against the number of stages advertised.
