How to pick an emergency filtration setup

  1. Define the scenario you are covering. A boil-water advisory on city supply, a multi-day outage on a private well, and a full evacuation are three different problems. Advisories need point-of-use microbiological filtering at home; outages need stored capacity; evacuation kits need something light enough to carry. Write the scenario down before shopping.
  2. Match capacity to your household. Count everyone in the house, add pets, and think in days rather than gallons. A gravity unit with a large upper chamber serves a family at home; a squeeze or straw filter serves one person on the move. Buying one of each is a common and sensible split for households planning for more than a single event.
  3. Verify the treatment claims. Read the vendor's own specification page for what the element is tested to remove: bacteria and cysts are the baseline, viruses require a purifier-class element or a chemical step. If the listing does not state a tested claim for a pathogen class, assume the filter does not handle it and plan a second step.
  4. Store it ready and rotate it. Keep the unit assembled or in its kit with unopened elements, and note the manufacturer's shelf-life guidance for any element that must not dry out after first use. A filter that was used once for practice and then stored wet may not be safe to rely on later, so keep a sealed spare element with the kit.

What an emergency filter must do that your kitchen filter does not

Everyday carbon filters are built for water that is already microbiologically safe; they polish taste, odor and chlorine. Emergency filtration assumes the opposite: the water may carry bacteria and protozoa from a compromised well, a flooded source or an untreated stream. That job requires a fine physical barrier or a purification step, which is why emergency elements are rated in absolute pore terms and everyday cartridges are not.
