Water filters refrigerator owners need to know about

Refrigerator water filters are small carbon cartridges inside the appliance that treat the water going to the dispenser and the ice maker. Getting the right one is mostly an identification problem: manufacturers use many part numbers, the cartridges look similar, and the wrong one either will not seat or will not seal.

Finding the right cartridge for your model

Start with the appliance model number, which is usually on a label inside the fresh food compartment, along the door frame or behind the crisper drawers. Then find the filter itself: common positions are inside the top right of the fridge compartment, in the base grille at the bottom front, or behind a small door in the ceiling of the compartment. The old cartridge normally carries its own part number printed on the body. Matching by appearance is a bad idea, because cartridges from the same family differ in the length of the stem and the position of the locking tabs even when the diameter looks identical.

Original versus aftermarket cartridges

Aftermarket cartridges are made to fit the same housings and cost less. The important differences are certification and fit tolerance. A cartridge worth buying names the contaminants it was tested to reduce and the standard it was tested against; one that only claims to fit has told you nothing about performance. Fit tolerance matters because the seal is made by an O-ring against a housing designed for a specific profile, and slightly wrong dimensions are the usual cause of drips inside the compartment or a dispenser that will not build pressure. If you go aftermarket, buy a brand that publishes its test data.

Changing one without flooding the kitchen

Most modern housings are self-sealing, so the water shuts off when the cartridge is withdrawn and you do not have to isolate the supply. Even so, have a towel ready, because the old cartridge holds water and will drip as it comes out. Twist or push to release depending on the design, insert the new one until it clicks fully home, then run several gallons through the dispenser to purge air and carbon fines. The dispenser will sputter and the first water may look gray; that is normal and clears. Discard the first batches of ice as well, and reset the filter indicator light.

What the cartridge does and when to replace it

The media is carbon, so the target is chlorine, chloramine byproducts, and the tastes and odors that come with them, plus fine particulate. Better cartridges are certified for lead, cysts or specific organics. None of them remove hardness, so cloudy ice and white residue in the glass will persist. Replace on the manufacturer's volume rating rather than waiting for a taste change, because carbon exhausts silently, and a long-overdue cartridge in a warm appliance is a poor place to keep water. Your utility's annual Consumer Confidence Report, which the EPA provides a finder for, tells you which disinfectant the carbon has to handle.

Can I run the fridge without a filter fitted?

Many models accept a bypass plug that lets water flow untreated. Without either the cartridge or the plug, the dispenser and ice maker usually will not run.

Why is the dispenser slow after a filter change?

Usually trapped air, which clears after purging several gallons. If it persists, the cartridge may not be seated fully or may be the wrong part.

Do refrigerator filters remove hardness?

No. They are carbon cartridges aimed at taste, odor and particulate. Cloudy ice and mineral residue in the glass come from dissolved hardness instead.
