TDS water readings and what they tell you

A TDS water reading is a measure of total dissolved solids, and almost every handheld meter arrives at it indirectly: it measures how well the water conducts electricity and converts that into an estimate of dissolved mineral content. That distinction is the whole story, because conductivity tells you how much dissolved material is present and nothing at all about what it is.

What the meter is really measuring

Dissolved salts carry an electrical charge, so water with more dissolved calcium, magnesium, sodium, chloride, sulfate and bicarbonate conducts better. A meter reads conductivity and multiplies it by a conversion factor to display a number. Two consequences follow. First, uncharged substances contribute almost nothing to the reading, so many organic compounds, most pesticides and a range of industrial chemicals are effectively invisible to it. Second, the same displayed number can come from entirely different mixtures, one of which is harmless mineral content and one of which is not.

Low is not safe and high is not dangerous

This is where the meter does most of its damage. Purified water contaminated with a trace organic compound reads very low and is not safe. Naturally mineralized spring water reads high and is perfectly fine to drink, which is why bottled mineral waters would fail the demonstrations done in showrooms. Treat the reading as a description of mineral content, not a verdict on safety. The only thing that answers the safety question is a laboratory panel naming specific analytes, or, for a municipal supply, the utility's own annual testing.

Where TDS overlaps with hardness

A large share of TDS in most household supplies is hardness. USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium and bands it as soft up to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard from 61 to 120, hard from 121 to 180, and very hard above 180 mg/L. That is why high-TDS homes so often have scale problems. It is also why the relationship is loose rather than fixed: a supply high in sodium and chloride can read high on TDS while being soft, and a softener will drop hardness without dropping the TDS number much at all.

The one job the meter does brilliantly

Where a TDS meter earns its keep is as a performance check on a reverse osmosis system. Take a reading of the feed water and a reading of the permeate on the day the system is commissioned, write both down, and repeat monthly. The ratio between them is a direct proxy for how well the membrane is rejecting dissolved solids. When that ratio drifts, you have caught a failing membrane, a leaking bypass or an exhausted pre-filter before anyone notices a taste change. That is a genuinely valuable use of a cheap tool.

What to do with a number you do not like

Before buying anything, find out what the dissolved solids consist of. On a municipal supply, the annual Consumer Confidence Report every community water system publishes, findable through the EPA's finder, lists what the utility detected and usually includes hardness and major ions. On a well, a laboratory panel does the same job. Once you know the composition, the treatment follows: softening for hardness, reverse osmosis or distillation for broad dissolved-solids reduction, and targeted media for specific ions. Questions people ask about tds water

Is a low TDS reading proof my water is clean?

No. A TDS meter reads electrical conductivity, so uncharged contaminants including many organic compounds barely register. Water can read very low and still contain something a laboratory would flag.

Does a water softener lower TDS?

Not meaningfully. Ion exchange swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium, so hardness falls sharply while the total dissolved solids stay in much the same range. A softener is not a TDS reduction device.

Why does my TDS reading change through the day?

Temperature affects conductivity, and so does whether the line has been standing. Take readings at similar temperature from a flushed tap if you want a series you can compare over months.

What is the best use for a handheld TDS meter?

Monitoring a reverse osmosis system. Record feed and permeate readings at commissioning, then track the ratio monthly to catch a tired membrane or a bypassing valve long before anything tastes different.
