What a tds filter is, and what genuinely reduces dissolved solids

There is no such thing as a TDS filter in the way the phrase implies. Total dissolved solids is a measure of everything dissolved in water, and dissolved material passes through filters that work by straining or by adsorption. Only two household technologies reduce it meaningfully, and before reaching for either it is worth asking whether a lower number is actually the goal.

Why ordinary filters do not change the number

A sediment cartridge strains particles, and dissolved material is not particulate, so the reading is unchanged. Activated carbon adsorbs organic molecules, chlorine and many taste compounds, but the dissolved minerals that make up most of the total pass straight through, so the reading barely moves. A softener swaps calcium and magnesium for sodium, which changes what is dissolved without reducing how much, so the reading stays about the same or rises slightly. None of this means those stages are failing: they were never measuring up to that number.

The two technologies that do reduce it

Reverse osmosis rejects most dissolved material at the membrane and is the practical household answer, fitted at the point of use with a drain connection and a storage tank. Deionization uses ion exchange resins that strip both positive and negative ions, producing very low dissolved solids water, and is used in laboratories, for car washing and for aquariums, with resin that is consumed and replaced rather than regenerated at home. Distillation also achieves it by evaporation, slowly and with a meaningful energy cost.

Whether a lower number is what you want

This is the part usually skipped. A high reading is not evidence of contamination, and a low one is not evidence of safety, since many contaminants that matter are harmful far below the concentrations that move the meter. Dissolved minerals are also what gives water its taste: the USGS describes hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, and stripping them out produces the flat taste people notice in fresh reverse osmosis water. Demineralized water is also aggressive to plumbing, which is why remineralization stages exist.

When reducing it is genuinely the goal

Three cases justify it. A laboratory result showing a specific dissolved contaminant that reverse osmosis removes. Brackish or high salinity source water, where the dissolved content is the problem itself. And technical uses such as car washing, aquariums, humidifiers and steam equipment, where minerals left behind cause spotting or scale.
