Backwash is the cycle in which a media filter reverses its flow, pushing water upwards through the bed fast enough to lift and separate the media so trapped material is released and carried out to drain. It is what lets a media tank clean itself indefinitely instead of being consumed like a cartridge, and it has three requirements that are easy to overlook.
What actually happens in the cycle
In service, water flows downwards through the bed and particles are trapped between the grains. In backwash the flow reverses and rises fast enough to fluidize the bed, expanding it so the grains separate and the trapped material is released into the rising water and carried to drain. A rinse stage follows, settling and reclassifying the media so the graded layers reform in the correct order, and then the unit returns to service. Skipping the rinse leaves the bed disordered.
Why it must happen regularly
A bed that is not backwashed compacts and cements, and water then finds channels through it, passing with little contact and doing very little treatment while pressure drop stays deceptively normal. On a neutralizing tank that also means the media cements into a mass rather than dissolving evenly. The cycle is triggered either on a timer or by a meter counting volume, and a metered head is the better arrangement since it matches the cleaning to the actual load.
The three requirements
A flow rate high enough to fluidize the bed, which on a low yield well can exceed what the borehole delivers and is a genuine design constraint rather than a detail. A drain that will take that flow, arriving quickly and carrying whatever the bed released, with a proper air gap. And the water itself, since every cycle sends a quantity to waste, which matters where water is metered or the well is marginal. All three are decided before the tank is chosen, not after.
Where you meet it
Sediment media tanks, iron and manganese oxidizing filters, calcite neutralizers, carbon beds and softeners all backwash, the softener as part of a longer regeneration that also draws brine.
