Emergency water filtration: what to have before you need it

Emergency water filtration is what stands between a household and bad water when the normal supply fails: a boil-water advisory, a flooded wellhead, a long outage that kills the pump, or a disaster that cuts the mains. The right gear depends on the threat, because a filter that polishes taste will not touch what floodwater carries. This page sorts the options, and the table below shows current prices from the vendors we track.

Building an emergency water plan

  1. Match the tool to the realistic threat. A boil advisory or flood means microorganisms, which calls for purification: boiling, a purifier-class gravity unit, or disinfection, not a taste filter. An outage with clean stored water mostly needs storage and a way to move it. Decide what you are defending against before buying anything.
  2. Cover the household's daily volume. Count people and pets and plan for drinking, cooking, and basic hygiene for several days. A straw-style filter serves one walker; a countertop gravity unit with a real reservoir is what actually feeds a family through a multi-day advisory without becoming a full-time job.
  3. Stock spare elements and store them dry. A gravity unit is only as useful as its elements, so keep an unused spare set sealed in storage, since some element types are ruined by freezing or by being stored wet after use. Read the maker's storage instructions the day the unit arrives, not the day the advisory hits.
  4. Run a practice fill before an emergency. Assemble the unit once, filter a full batch, and taste it, so priming quirks and slow first runs get discovered on a calm afternoon. Write the purchase date on the elements and revisit the kit yearly; an emergency is the wrong time to read instructions by flashlight.

Filtration versus purification, and why the word matters

In an emergency the distinction is not academic: filtration removes particles and many microorganisms depending on the element, while purification also addresses viruses, which are small enough to pass many filters. Floodwater and sewage-contaminated supplies are virus territory, so for those events choose purifier-class equipment, boiling, or chemical disinfection rather than a filter alone.

During a boil-water advisory, boiling remains the reference method and your utility's notice states what it covers. Gravity purifiers earn their place when boiling is impractical for the volume a household needs, or when the power to boil is the thing that failed. Treat the two as complements in the kit, not rivals.

Where emergency gear fits alongside your normal treatment

Household systems mostly stop working exactly when emergencies start: an under-sink unit is useless with no line pressure, and a UV purifier is dark in an outage. That is the case for keeping one piece of equipment that works by gravity alone, with no power, no plumbing, and no pressure, stored where flooding will not reach it.

Well owners have a second recovery job after a flood: the well itself may need disinfection and a lab test before it goes back into normal service, and the emergency unit covers the household in the meantime. Our well water testing guide covers proving the supply clean again; do not skip that step just because stored water held out.

Common questions

Is a camping straw filter enough for a family emergency?
No. Straws serve one person drinking directly and cannot fill pots or bottles for cooking and hygiene. A household kit needs a gravity unit with a reservoir, plus stored water to bridge the first day.
Do emergency filters handle floodwater?
Only purifier-class equipment addresses viruses, which flood and sewage contamination can carry. For those events use a purifier, boiling, or chemical disinfection, and pre-filter murky water through cloth first.
What does a household emergency filtration setup cost?
A gravity unit with spare elements is the core purchase, and prices vary with capacity and element type. The table on this page shows current vendor pricing, typically around $1,531.
How long do unused filter elements keep in storage?
Sealed, dry, and protected from freezing, most elements store for years, but the maker's stated shelf life governs. Mark the purchase date on the box and check the kit annually alongside your other supplies.
