A reverse osmosis air gap faucet is a backflow protection device disguised as a tap. Why the air gap exists at all

A reverse osmosis unit continuously sends reject water to the sink drain. An air gap removes that possibility physically rather than mechanically: the drain water has to fall through open air before continuing, and water cannot be siphoned across a break in the pipe. How it is plumbed

An air gap faucet has three tubes running to it instead of one. A small line brings treated water up from the storage tank to the spout. A third, larger line takes that water back down to a barbed connection on the sink drain tailpiece, above the trap. The drain saddle or tailpiece fitting must sit above the trap weir, and the return tube must fall continuously with no dips or kinks.

Air gap faucets are noisier than standard ones by design, because water is falling through air inside the faucet body whenever the unit is producing. A steady trickling sound is normal. What is not normal is water appearing on the countertop around the faucet base, which almost always means the drain return line is restricted: a kinked tube, a partially blocked drain saddle, a sag holding water, or debris in the small vent passage. The fix is to clear the return path rather than to tighten anything. Persistent spitting after clearing usually points to the drain connection being too far from the faucet or run with too little fall.
