An RO system air gap is a break in the drain path that stops dirty sink water from ever being siphoned back into the reverse osmosis unit. It is built into the faucet body: the reject water leaves the membrane, is discharged into an open chamber under the faucet deck, then falls by gravity into the drain line. That deliberate gap of air is the whole protection, and it is why an air gap faucet has three passages instead of one.
What the air gap actually prevents
A reverse osmosis unit sends its reject stream to the same drain that carries sink waste and, in most kitchens, the dishwasher discharge. If that drain backs up while the RO is running, a direct connection could pull waste water back along the reject tubing toward the membrane. Plumbing codes call that a cross connection, and the standard answer is to break the pipe run with air so nothing can travel upstream. Many local codes require an air gap on the drain of a residential RO unit, and inspectors in those jurisdictions will look for it, so check what your jurisdiction expects before you drill the sink.
How the three passages work
An air gap faucet carries treated water up to the spout in one passage, takes reject water from the membrane up into the faucet body in a second, and lets that reject water fall into a larger third passage that runs down to the drain saddle. The second and third do not touch: the water leaves one and drops through open air into the other. That is why the drain tubing on an air gap install is a size larger than the line feeding it, and why it must run downhill the whole way with no dips. A loop or a sag holds water, and held water backs the chamber up.
Gurgling, spitting and water on the counter
The noise people notice first is a gurgle or a trickle from the faucet base whenever the system is producing, and that is normal: it is the sound of reject water falling through the gap. What is not normal is water coming out of the small hole in the faucet deck and running onto the counter. That means the drop leg is restricted, almost always by debris in the drain saddle, a kink in the larger tubing, a run that climbs before it falls, or a saddle clamped over a drain pipe whose hole was never drilled cleanly. Clear the saddle, straighten the run and give it a continuous fall, and the overflow stops.
Non air gap faucets and the tradeoff
Plenty of RO units are sold with a plain single passage faucet and a drain saddle connected directly to the tubing. They are quieter, they leave the counter dry, and they are simpler to install because there is no bulky faucet body under the deck. They also remove the physical protection the air gap provides, and in a jurisdiction that requires one they will not pass inspection. If you go that route, mount the saddle above the trap arm and on the vertical or horizontal run specified by the manufacturer, keep the tubing high, and be aware you are relying on hydraulics rather than an air break. Questions people ask about ro system air gap
Is the gurgling from an air gap faucet a fault?
No. A short trickling or gurgling sound while the system fills the tank is the reject water falling through the air gap, which is exactly what it is meant to do.
Can I convert an air gap faucet to a non air gap one?
You can swap the faucet and connect the drain directly, but check local code first, since many jurisdictions require the air gap on a residential reverse osmosis drain.
Why is water spilling out of the hole in my faucet base?
The drain side is restricted. Check the drain saddle for debris, remove kinks, and make sure the larger tubing falls continuously from the faucet to the saddle.
Does the air gap affect how much water the system makes?
Not directly, but a restricted drain line raises back pressure on the membrane, which slows production and can shorten membrane life until the blockage is cleared.
