An air gap faucet carries the reverse osmosis drain line up through its body, across an open break, and back down to the waste connection, which is what stops anything siphoning back from the drain. That design means three tubes rather than one, a larger hole in the deck, and a drain path that is unforgiving of restriction. Almost every complaint about these faucets traces back to one of those three.
Check the hole before buying the faucet
An air gap faucet needs a larger deck hole than a plain one because of the extra channels in its base, and the required diameter varies between models. If a sink knockout or an existing hole is being reused, measure it against the specific faucet's requirement rather than assuming a standard. Enlarging a hole in stainless is possible with the right step drill and patience; enlarging one in stone or a solid surface worktop is a specialist job and an expensive surprise if it is discovered after the box is open.
Getting the three tubes right
Product water comes up to the spout from the storage tank. The system's reject line goes up to the faucet's inlet channel. And a third, larger tube takes the water back down from the air gap to the drain saddle. That third tube is the one that matters: it flows by gravity across an open break, so it must run continuously downhill with no dips, no kinks and no long horizontal runs, and it should be the full diameter the faucet specifies. Any restriction there sends water out onto the counter.
The drain saddle and the trap
Connect above the trap, never below it, so the water seal continues to keep sewer gas out of the line. Position the saddle so the connection enters above any standing water, and align the hole in the pipe with the hole in the saddle, which sounds obvious and is a frequent installation error. Keep the run from the faucet to the saddle as short and as steep as the cabinet allows. On a disposer, use the dedicated port if there is one rather than saddling the disposer body.
Living with it, and the usual fault
Expect a gurgling sound during production: water crossing the open gap is audible and it is normal. Water appearing at the gap or on the counter is not, and it almost always means the gravity drain path below has become restricted, usually with debris at the saddle or a sagging tube. Clear that before suspecting the faucet. Where local code requires an air gap and the faucet type is unwelcome, ask about an approved in line air gap device instead.
