A whole house water purifying system is rarely one tank. It is a short sequence of stages plumbed in a deliberate order, each one protecting the next, sized to the flow your house pulls at its busiest minute. Getting the order and the sizing right matters more than which brand name is on the tank.

A backwashing tank holds loose media, runs a periodic rinse to the drain on its own control valve, and asks for media replacement in years rather than months, but it needs a drain line and a power outlet at the tank. Vendors list both classes side by side. Choose the one that matches how much maintenance you will genuinely do, not the one that sounds more advanced.
Sizing by peak flow, not by house square footage
Manufacturers publish a service flow rating for every model and step their systems by bathroom count, which is a proxy for how many fixtures can open at once. Work out your realistic peak: two showers plus a washing machine is a common worst case in a family home. If the system is rated near that peak, the pressure drop shows up as a weak shower whenever the laundry runs. Oversizing a tank costs a little more media and solves the complaint permanently, while undersizing cannot be fixed by any adjustment on the valve.
The install details people skip and regret
Three fittings decide whether you ever service the system without shutting off the house: a bypass loop, isolation valves on both sides, and a sample port after the last stage so you can prove the train is working. Backwashing units also need an air gap at the drain and enough clearance to lift the tank head. Add a pressure gauge before and after the filter bank, because a rising gap between the two is the earliest honest warning that a stage is loading up, well before anyone notices at a tap.
