Ultrafiltration system: what it filters and where it fits

An ultrafiltration system pushes water through hollow fiber membranes with pores fine enough to hold back particles, cysts and bacteria while letting dissolved minerals through. That last part is the whole point of choosing it: unlike reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration does not demineralize the water, does not need a drain connection, and does not have to store its output in a tank.

What passes and what does not

Ultrafiltration membranes sit between a fine carbon block and a reverse osmosis membrane in tightness. Suspended solids, colloids, cysts such as giardia and cryptosporidium, and bacteria are far too large to pass and are held on the feed side of the fiber. Dissolved salts, hardness, fluoride, nitrates and most other dissolved ions go straight through. Viruses are smaller than bacteria and are the boundary case, so a system aimed at them needs a rating that says so explicitly.

Why households choose it over reverse osmosis

Ultrafiltration runs on line pressure, produces water at the rate you draw it, and sends nothing to the drain, so there is no storage tank crowding the cabinet and no waste stream. The mineral content and taste of the water are unchanged, which many people prefer. The catch is straightforward: if your problem is a dissolved contaminant, hardness, high total dissolved solids, fluoride or nitrate, ultrafiltration will not help and reverse osmosis is the correct tool.

The well water case

Private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and roughly 15 percent of the US population, over 43 million people in more than 23 million households, relies on them. A USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. Ultrafiltration is a sensible barrier against microbial and particulate risk in a well supply, but it is a barrier, not a cure for a contaminated source, and it belongs downstream of sediment removal and behind a proper test.

Point of use or whole house

Under-sink ultrafiltration modules are compact and are commonly fitted as the last stage after sediment and carbon on a drinking tap. Whole house ultrafiltration exists but is a bigger commitment, because the membrane area has to carry full household flow and the module needs regular flushing to shed the layer of solids building on the fiber surface. Most homes get better value putting ultrafiltration where they drink and a simpler filter on the main line.

Fouling, flushing and membrane life

The failure mode of any membrane is fouling: solids accumulate on the surface until flow falls off. Ultrafiltration modules are designed to be flushed, and many are backwashable, so the routine is a periodic rinse rather than a cartridge swap. Keeping a sediment prefilter ahead of the module extends its life considerably. When flow no longer recovers after a flush, the module is done. Questions people ask about ultrafiltration system

Does ultrafiltration remove hardness?

No. Calcium and magnesium are dissolved ions and pass through the membrane, so an ultrafiltration system does nothing about scale, spotting or soap performance. Softening is a separate job.

Does an ultrafiltration system waste water?

Not in normal service, since it has no continuous reject stream. It uses water only during flushing or backwashing, which is a fraction of what a reverse osmosis system sends to the drain.

Is ultrafiltration enough for a well with bacteria?

It is a strong physical barrier to bacteria, but a well with a positive coliform test needs the source investigated and disinfected. Treat the well first, then use filtration as ongoing protection.

Can I combine ultrafiltration with carbon?

Yes, and most systems do. Sediment and carbon go first to remove particles, chlorine and taste compounds, with the ultrafiltration module last as the fine barrier before the tap.
