A UF filter is an ultrafiltration membrane: a bundle of hollow fibers with pores fine enough to strain out particles, cysts and bacteria while letting dissolved minerals pass straight through. That last point is the whole story. Ultrafiltration is a physical sieve, so it takes out what is suspended and leaves what is dissolved.
What the membrane actually catches
Picture thousands of drinking-straw fibers packed into a cartridge, each wall riddled with pores far smaller than anything you could see. Water is pushed through the wall and anything physically larger than the pore stays behind. That covers silt and turbidity, the cysts that cause the classic waterborne stomach illnesses, and bacteria, which are big objects at this scale. It does not cover dissolved salts, hardness, nitrate, fluoride or most PFAS compounds, because those travel as individual ions or molecules that slip through with the water. It also does not cover chlorine taste, which is why a UF cartridge is almost always paired with carbon.
UF against RO and against carbon
Reverse osmosis uses a dense film with no open pores, driven by pressure, and it rejects dissolved solids as well as particles, which is why it needs a drain line and a storage tank and why it wastes some water. Ultrafiltration needs neither: it runs at line pressure, delivers on demand at full flow, and sends nothing to drain in normal operation. Carbon, by contrast, adsorbs chemicals onto its surface and does essentially nothing about microbes. The three are complementary. A common under-sink build is sediment, then carbon, then UF, giving taste and microbial protection without a tank, and RO is added only when dissolved contaminants are the problem.
Where it fits in a whole-house setup
On a well or a rural supply, a whole-house UF unit is often placed as the last barrier after sediment and any iron treatment, so every tap and shower gets water that has been strained of particles and microorganisms. Order matters: send raw iron-bearing or heavily silted water straight at a UF membrane and you will blind it in weeks. On municipal water, whole-house UF is less common because the utility already disinfects, and the more useful whole-house device is carbon for chlorine or chloramine. Flushing, fouling and replacement
A UF cartridge collects everything it strains on the inlet face of the fibers, so it needs periodic flushing. Many household units have a simple flush valve you open for a minute or two, which sweeps accumulated solids out of the fiber bundle and buys back flow. Watch pressure drop rather than the calendar: when the flow at the tap sags and a flush no longer restores it, the cartridge is done. Freezing destroys the fibers, so a unit in an unheated garage or crawlspace needs protecting, and a membrane that has been allowed to dry out completely after use rarely comes back to full flow.
Questions people ask about uf filter
Does a UF filter soften water?
No. Hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium and it passes straight through an ultrafiltration membrane, so scale and spotting continue unchanged. Softening needs ion exchange or a conditioner.
Does UF remove PFAS or lead?
Not reliably. Both travel as dissolved species that are small enough to pass the pores. Those need reverse osmosis, or a certified specialist adsorption cartridge, rather than ultrafiltration.
Does a UF system waste water?
Not in normal operation. Unlike reverse osmosis it has no continuous drain flow, though you do discard a short burst of water each time you run the flush valve.
Can I put UF on a well without disinfection?
It gives a physical barrier against bacteria and cysts, but it is not a substitute for finding and fixing the contamination source, and many well owners run UV as well for a redundant barrier.
What pressure does a UF filter need?
Ordinary household line pressure is enough, which is one of its advantages. It is worth checking that pressure at the point of use before and after installation so you know your starting baseline.
