Use unions or press fittings at the unit connections so it can be removed without cutting. Wrap threaded joints with the tape or compound the manufacturer specifies, and do not over-tighten plastic ports, which is the single most common cause of a cracked housing. When the joints are made, open the inlet slowly with the outlet closed to fill the housing gently, check for leaks, then open the outlet and let it fill the system. Run every fixture until the water clears and the air is out, and expect a slug of carbon fines first.

Afterward: sanitize, log, and know when to call someone

Sanitize the housings as part of the first assembly if the manufacturer recommends it, and note the date on the housing itself. Record the clean pressure readings, since the difference between the two gauges is the signal you will use to decide when the cartridge is due. Call a licensed plumber where the main is buried in a finished wall, where the incoming pipe is galvanized and likely to fail when disturbed, where local code requires permits or backflow protection, or where a drain and outlet have to be added.
