Choosing a microplastics filter for your home

A microplastics filter is any filter whose pores are small enough to physically stop plastic particles carried in water. There is no special media for plastics and no chemistry involved: this is straining, so the only question that matters is how small the openings are and whether all the water is forced through them. That makes the choice unusually simple to reason about.

Size is the entire mechanism

Microplastics span a wide range of sizes, from fragments visible in a glass down to particles far too small to see. A filter stops what cannot fit through it, so a coarse sediment cartridge catches the largest fragments and lets everything else past, while progressively finer media catch progressively more. Carbon block is effective here in a way loose granular carbon is not, because a block is a solid extruded wall with a fine, consistent pore structure and water cannot slip between grains. Reverse osmosis and ultrafiltration membranes go finer still and stop essentially all particulate matter, plastics included, because the membrane pore size is far below the smallest particles in question.

What to fit, and where

For drinking and cooking water, a point-of-use filter at the kitchen sink is the sensible place, because that is where the water you swallow comes from and a small unit can afford a fine, slow media that a whole-house filter cannot. A quality carbon block under the sink or on the countertop is the straightforward option. A reverse osmosis system is the thorough one, and it brings dissolved contaminants down as well. Whole-house filtration is a different job: it protects plumbing and treats every tap, but the flow rates involved push you toward coarser media, so it is a poor primary answer for particles this small.

Certification, and the honest limits of it

Independent certification is the only way to know a cartridge does what the box says, and the useful ones name a specific contaminant reduction claim tested against a standard. Microplastics are not a long-established certification category the way chlorine, lead and cysts are, so many products cite particulate reduction classes or cyst reduction instead. Those are informative proxies, because a filter certified for cyst reduction is demonstrably holding particles in a fine size range under real flow. Treat any bare marketing claim without a tested standard behind it as unproven, and prefer a product whose maker publishes exactly what was tested and to which method.

Your water report will not mention them

The EPA notes that every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report and maintains a finder for locating yours. That report lists what the utility is required to monitor, which is why lead, disinfection byproducts and nitrate appear on it. There is no federal drinking water standard for microplastics, so no utility is required to test for or report them, and their absence from your report is not evidence either way. Read the report for what it does cover, then decide on a microplastics filter on the general grounds above rather than waiting for a local number that no one is obliged to produce.

Does boiling water remove microplastics?

No. Boiling kills microorganisms but does not remove particles, and it concentrates whatever does not evaporate. Physical filtration is the only removal route.

Will a pitcher filter stop microplastics?
