Can you run a reverse osmosis water filter for refrigerator ice?

You can feed a refrigerator from a reverse osmosis system, and plenty of households do it for clear ice and better tasting dispenser water. The catch is pressure and rate: an under sink RO unit makes water slowly into a small tank, and a fridge that also has to fill an ice mold can outpace it. The plumbing is easy, the sizing is where people go wrong.

Why RO makes better ice

Ice turns cloudy because dissolved minerals and gases come out of solution as the water freezes and get trapped as white crystals in the middle of the cube. Reverse osmosis pushes water through a membrane that rejects most dissolved solids to the drain, so what reaches the ice maker is close to mineral free and freezes clearer and harder. The same removal takes out the chlorine taste and the flat mineral edge that people notice in dispenser water, particularly in hard water areas where an ordinary fridge cartridge only handles taste and particles. The membrane is doing something a carbon cartridge cannot: removing dissolved content rather than adsorbing flavors.

The pressure problem nobody warns you about

An under sink RO unit does not produce water on demand. It trickles through the membrane into a small pressurized storage tank and delivers from that tank, and the tank refills far more slowly than a faucet empties it. Add a refrigerator and you have a second draw that fills an ice mold several times a day without asking. Long, thin tubing runs to the back of the fridge cost more pressure again, and some ice makers and dispensers simply will not operate below their minimum inlet pressure. The symptoms are familiar: small hollow cubes, a slow dispenser, and a kitchen faucet that runs out mid glass. A permeate pump or a small booster pump on the tank outlet is the usual cure, and shortening the run helps more than people expect.

How the connection is made

The standard method is a tee on the RO storage tank line or on the line to the RO faucet, feeding small diameter tubing along the cabinet backs to the refrigerator. Use tubing rated for drinking water, secure it so a rolling fridge cannot pinch it, and fit a shutoff valve at the tee so the fridge can be isolated without draining the system. Leave a service loop behind the appliance. Many installers put a small inline post filter in that run, which is not doing much chemically but does catch anything shed from the tubing. Vendors sell under sink RO systems with the fittings and tubing to make this run, and the manufacturer instructions will name the tank pressure their unit expects.

When an inline filter is the better answer

If your complaint is chlorine taste and the ice is already reasonable, a plain inline carbon filter on the fridge supply is cheaper, needs no tank, costs no pressure worth measuring and produces no drain water. Reverse osmosis earns its place when you have hard water leaving mineral haze in the ice, high dissolved solids that make everything taste flat, or a specific contaminant that a membrane removes and carbon does not. Will RO water damage my ice maker?

It will not harm the appliance, but some manufacturers note that very low mineral water can affect ice maker sensors and warranty terms. Check the appliance manual before plumbing a membrane to it.

Why did my ice cubes get smaller after connecting RO?

Almost always inlet pressure. The RO tank cannot refill fast enough for the ice maker and the kitchen faucet together, so a permeate or booster pump, or a shorter tubing run, is the usual fix.

Do I still need the filter inside the fridge?

Not for treatment, since the RO has already done more than that cartridge can. Many fridges need a bypass plug fitted in place of the cartridge, and some will restrict flow until one is installed.

How far can the tubing run to the refrigerator?

Keep it as short as the layout allows. Every extra length of small bore tubing costs pressure, and long runs across a kitchen are the most common reason a dispenser feels weak.
