Running reverse osmosis to a refrigerator means teeing the RO output into the line that feeds the ice maker and door dispenser instead of leaving it at the kitchen faucet alone. It works well and the ice is noticeably clearer, but the fridge was designed for household supply pressure and RO delivers much less, so the job is as much about pressure as it is about plumbing.

Why fridges and RO fight each other

A refrigerator's ice maker fills through a solenoid valve that opens for a fixed time, not until a sensor says the mold is full. Household supply fills that mold in the allotted seconds. RO water arrives from a storage tank at a fraction of that pressure, so the same timed fill delivers less water, and you get small, hollow or half-formed cubes. The door dispenser feels slow for the same reason. Nothing is broken and no amount of adjusting the filter will fix it, because the constraint is the pressure available at the valve.

Fixing the pressure rather than living with it

There are three practical answers. Set the RO tank's air charge correctly, because an undercharged tank is the most common reason an ice maker starves. Add a permeate pump, which lets the membrane fill the tank against less back pressure so the tank holds a fuller, stronger charge. Or fit a small delivery pump with a pressure switch on the line to the fridge, which raises pressure at the appliance to something it expects. Some ice makers also allow a longer fill time in a service setting, which is worth checking before adding hardware.

Making the connection

Tee off after the RO faucet's supply so the fridge draws treated water, run the tubing to the appliance, and use the fitting the tubing was made for rather than an adapter stack. RO water is aggressive to some metals, so use the plastic tubing and fittings supplied for the job instead of copper, and avoid brass in contact with the permeate where the maker warns against it. Route the run so it is not pinched behind the fridge, leave a service loop, and shut off and check every joint under pressure before pushing the appliance back into place. What to do with the refrigerator's own filter

The cartridge inside the fridge is a carbon filter aimed at chlorine, taste and odor from municipal water. Many owners fit the bypass plug the manufacturer supplies and keep the RO membrane as the real treatment.
