Deionizing water at home means running it through ion exchange resin that strips positively and negatively charged ions and leaves water behind. It is straightforward equipment, but resin is consumed rather than regenerated in domestic use, so the whole exercise only pays off if you feed it water that has already been cleaned up.
Feed the resin the cleanest water you can
DI resin costs money by the ion. Every dissolved solid in the feed water shortens the life of the bed, so the standard arrangement is a reverse osmosis unit first and a mixed bed DI cartridge as the final polish. Running raw hard water straight into a DI cartridge exhausts it fast, because hardness, which the USGS defines as dissolved calcium and magnesium, is usually the biggest single load in a household supply.
Mixed bed cartridges and how they are used
A mixed bed holds cation and anion resin together, so a single pass handles both charges. Household kits come as inline cartridges with quick connect fittings or as refillable canisters you pack yourself. Colour indicating resin changes shade as it exhausts, which is the cheapest way to see when the bed is spent. Flow should be slow enough for contact time, and the cartridge should be kept wet, because dried resin loses capacity.
Proving it worked with a meter
A total dissolved solids meter is the practical check, since deionized water conducts electricity very poorly. Measure the feed, then measure the output. A large drop means the bed is working; a rising output reading means it is exhausting. Track the numbers over a few weeks and you will learn the real service life for your water, which is worth far more than any figure a supplier prints on a box.
The uses that actually justify it
Spot free rinsing for cars, boats and windows, aquarium top-up water, steam irons and humidifiers, and topping up lead acid batteries. All of these want water with nothing dissolved in it that can leave a deposit. Questions people ask about how to deionize water
Can I deionize water by boiling it?
No. Boiling concentrates dissolved minerals rather than removing them. Distillation, which condenses the steam, gives similar results to deionization but by a different mechanism.
Is a water softener the same as deionizing?
No. A softener exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium, so dissolved solids stay in the water. Deionization removes ions of both charges and leaves almost nothing.
Can DI resin be regenerated at home?
Not practically. Regeneration uses strong acid and caustic, which is a commercial process. Domestic users replace the cartridge or send canisters back for exchange.
