A point of use water filter treats water at a single fixture instead of at the main line, which makes it the cheapest way to deal with anything that matters only in the water you drink and cook with. The formats range from a pitcher in the refrigerator to a plumbed reverse osmosis unit under the sink, and the differences in what they remove are far larger than the differences in price.

The formats, honestly compared

Pitcher filters need no installation and treat small volumes slowly through a small carbon cartridge, which suits taste improvement and little else. Faucet mounts screw onto the spout and divert water through a cartridge, convenient but limited by size and prone to slowing flow. Countertop units connect by a hose to the faucet and hold more media. Under sink filters are plumbed permanently and take large cartridges with real contact time. Match the format to the contaminant

If a format seems to deliver a lot of water very fast through a very small filter, that speed is coming out of contact time and therefore out of performance.

Where point of use stops being the right answer

Point of use treatment does nothing for the water going into the shower, the washing machine or the water heater. Hard water still scales the heater. Chlorine still dries skin in the shower. Iron still stains the tub. Sediment still wears valve seats throughout the house. Maintenance is the difference between a filter and an ornament

Every format depends on cartridge changes, and every format fails silently when they are skipped. Carbon exhausts without any change in flow or clarity, and a saturated cartridge left in service can release accumulated compounds back into the water. Choose a format whose cartridges you can actually source and afford to change on schedule, note the change date somewhere you will see it, and keep a spare. A cheap filter changed on time beats an expensive one that has been in the housing since the year it was installed.

Is a point of use filter enough on its own?

For drinking and cooking water, often yes. It does nothing for hardness scaling the water heater, chlorine in the shower or iron staining the tub, all of which need treatment at the main line instead.
