What is di water, and how it differs from filtered water

Deionized water is water that has been passed through ion exchange resins that strip out dissolved ions, both positive and negative, leaving water with very little dissolved content. It is not filtered water with a fancy name: the mechanism is exchange rather than straining, and the result is a specific technical product used where dissolved minerals would cause a problem.

How deionization works

Two resins do the work. A cation resin exchanges positively charged ions such as calcium, magnesium and sodium for hydrogen. An anion resin exchanges negatively charged ions such as chloride, sulfate and nitrate for hydroxide. The hydrogen and hydroxide released combine into water, so the dissolved content is removed rather than substituted. Mixed bed systems combine both resins in one vessel for the most complete result. The resins are consumed and are either regenerated with strong chemicals or replaced as cartridges.

What it produces, and what it does not

The output is water with very low dissolved solids and very low conductivity, which is precisely what makes it useful. What deionization does not do is remove anything uncharged: bacteria, viruses, particles and many organic molecules pass straight through, since they carry no charge for the resin to exchange. That is the crucial difference from filtration and from reverse osmosis, and it is why deionized water is not automatically clean water in the microbiological sense.

Where it is used

Laboratories, where dissolved minerals would interfere with analysis. Car washing and window cleaning, where water that leaves nothing behind as it dries means no spotting and no drying by hand. Aquariums, where the water chemistry is built up deliberately from a blank starting point. Steam equipment, humidifiers and batteries, where scale is the enemy. In each case the value is the absence of dissolved content rather than any purification in the everyday sense.

How it compares with reverse osmosis

Reverse osmosis rejects most dissolved material at a membrane and also excludes particles and organisms by size. Deionization removes ions more completely but nothing else. That is why the two are frequently combined, with reverse osmosis doing the bulk removal and a deionizing stage polishing what is left, which also makes the expensive resin last far longer. Is deionized water the same as distilled?
