A washing machine water filter is a small inline cartridge fitted to the fill hoses so the water reaching the drum is screened before it touches your clothes. It is worth fitting when sediment or iron is marking laundry or blocking the inlet valve screens, and it is the wrong tool when the real problem is hardness or dissolved iron. Knowing which one you have decides whether you spend on a hose filter or on the main line.
What actually damages laundry
Three different faults look the same in the basket. Grit and rust flakes are physical particles that grind into fabric and block the inlet valve screens, and a hose filter deals with them well. Dissolved iron and manganese are invisible in the glass, then oxidize in the hot wash and in the air on the line, leaving orange or gray casts that build with every cycle. Penn State Extension records that iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese, precisely because staining is what they cause. Hardness is a third problem: calcium and magnesium react with detergent, cut its cleaning power and leave a stiff residue in the fibers. A filter on the hose does nothing for either of the dissolved problems.
The screens you already have
Every washer has small mesh screens where the fill hoses thread onto the inlet valves, and on many machines they are the first thing to block. If your fill is slow, or the machine reports a long fill fault, shut the taps, unscrew the hoses and look at the screens before buying anything. They come out with needle nose pliers, rinse clean under a tap and go back the same way round. A washer that fills normally after that had a sediment problem, which is the case a hose filter is built for. A washer that still fills slowly has a valve or supply problem, not a water quality one.
Fitting a filter on the fill hoses
Inline washer filters thread between the tap and the hose, or between the hose and the machine, using standard hose thread. Fit them on the cold line first, since that carries most of the volume, and put one on the hot line only if your heater is shedding scale or rust. Support the weight so the cartridge is not hanging off the valve, keep the arrow pointing toward the machine, and check the joints for weeping once the taps are back on. These filters are small, so they load quickly on water with a real sediment problem. If you are changing them constantly, the flow is telling you the fix belongs upstream.
When to treat the whole house instead

Questions people ask about washing machine water filter
Will a washing machine filter stop orange staining on clothes?
Only if the iron is already oxidized into particles. Dissolved iron passes straight through a hose filter and stains in the wash, so it needs an iron filter on the main line.
Does a washing machine water filter soften water?
No. Softening is an ion exchange process that needs a resin tank and salt. A hose cartridge cannot remove calcium and magnesium, so detergent performance will not change.
Should I filter the hot fill hose as well?
Usually only if the water heater is shedding scale or rust. Most washers draw mainly from the cold line, so start there and add hot only if you see debris from it.
How often does the cartridge need changing?
It is driven by load, not by the calendar. Watch fill speed and change the cartridge when the machine slows, following the interval printed on the cartridge as a backstop.
