What the machine needs protecting from
The inlet valve is a small solenoid with tight clearances, and grit is what jams it. Ahead of it sits a fine mesh screen in the hose coupling that blocks and causes slow filling, which is the symptom most people notice first. Beyond the machine, iron in the supply is the laundry problem: it passes through dissolved and oxidizes on the fabric, giving the yellow to orange marks that get worse with bleach because bleach oxidizes the iron faster. Sediment cartridges handle sand, rust flakes and pipe debris and are what most installations need. Carbon handles chlorine, which matters mainly for the life of hoses and seals and for anyone reacting to it on clothing. Fit an isolation valve upstream so the cartridge can be changed without shutting the property down, and leave clearance below the sump equal to its depth or the cartridge cannot be withdrawn.

Hard water. Scale on the heating element is what ends most washing machines on hard supplies, and it is caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium that a cartridge filter passes straight through.
