What it genuinely protects
Washing machines draw through a narrow inlet valve with a fine mesh screen at the tail of the hose. Sand, scale flakes and rust chips from an old galvanized run clog that screen, and once it is partly blocked the machine fills slowly, throws fill-time errors and eventually needs the valve replaced. If your complaint is grey, stiff laundry, poor lather or a scaled heater, the cause is hardness, and hardness is dissolved. If your complaint is orange or brown staining on white loads, the cause is iron, and unless that iron has already oxidized into visible particles the cartridge will pass it straight through. Both of those problems are solved on the house main, not at the machine.
Fitting it without choking the fill
Washers fill through a narrow hose already, so an undersized filter body makes fill times worse rather than better. Choose a housing with ports matching the hose thread and a flow rating comfortably above the machine's fill demand, fit it on the cold line after an accessible shutoff, and support it so its weight does not hang on the hose. Keep the housing where you can reach it, because a cartridge nobody can see is a cartridge nobody changes.
Fit the right machine for the actual problem
Work backwards from the symptom. Slow filling and valve failures mean sediment, and an inline filter is the correct, cheap answer. Scale and dull laundry mean hardness, which points to a softener sized on your hardness figure. Staining means iron, which needs oxidation and filtration on the incoming line. Questions people ask about in line water filter for washing machine
Will an inline filter soften my laundry water?
No. Softening removes dissolved calcium and magnesium by ion exchange, which a particle filter cannot do. You need a softener for that.
How often should the cartridge be changed?
Whenever fill times lengthen, or on the manufacturer's interval. On a sediment-heavy well it can be far more frequent than the label suggests.
Can I fit one to the hot supply too?
Only with a housing rated for hot water. Standard cold-rated plastic sumps can distort or fail on a hot line, so check the rating first.
