What a washing machine hose filter is and when it matters

Every washing machine inlet hose has a filter, and most owners meet it only when the machine starts filling slowly or reports a water supply fault. It is a fine mesh screen sitting in the hose coupling at the tap end, and its job is to keep grit, rust and scale flakes out of the inlet valve, which is a small solenoid that jams easily.

Where it is and how to clear it

Close the tap, then unscrew the hose at the tap end and look inside the coupling: the screen sits recessed in the fitting, sometimes with a small tab to pull it out. Ease it free with pliers, rinse it under running water, and use a soft brush on anything stuck. If it is furred with scale rather than dirty, soak it in a descaler or vinegar until clear.
