Saltless water softener vs salt water softener: which one should you buy?

A salt softener removes calcium and magnesium from the water. A saltless unit leaves them in and changes their behavior so they are less likely to form sticking scale. Both are sold as softeners, only one softens, and the right choice depends on whether your complaint is scale on the heater or soap that will not lather.

What each machine does to the water

The salt unit runs water through cation exchange resin, which trades calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium and periodically regenerates itself with brine. Hardness leaves the water. A saltless unit typically uses template assisted crystallization media, which encourages hardness to form microscopic crystals that stay suspended rather than plating onto pipe and heater surfaces. The hardness is still in the water when it reaches your tap.

What you will actually notice at the tap

With a salt softener, soap lathers freely, the water feels slippery, spotting on glassware drops away and existing scale gradually clears. With a salt-free conditioner, scale build-up slows and the heater benefits, but the water still spots, laundry still feels the same and soap still fights you. If your complaint is cosmetic and cleaning related, only ion exchange addresses it. If your complaint is pipe and appliance scale, both have a case.

Running cost, waste and maintenance

The salt unit needs salt topped up, uses water to regenerate and sends brine to the drain, which some sewer districts and most septic owners think about carefully. Several states and municipalities restrict brine discharge. The saltless unit uses no salt, no electricity in most designs and sends nothing to drain, but its media eventually needs replacing, and it is sensitive to iron and to chlorine unless prefiltered.

Deciding with your own numbers

Start from a hardness test. The USGS bands run soft from 0 to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate, moderately hard 61 to 120, hard 121 to 180, and very hard above that. Toward the top of those bands, households that want soft-feeling water almost always end up with ion exchange. Can I run both a conditioner and a softener?

There is rarely a reason to. Once ion exchange has removed the hardness, there is nothing left for a scale conditioner downstream to act on.
