A water softener saltless in name is not a softener in function: salt-free units are conditioners that change how hardness minerals behave instead of removing them. That matters because the calcium and magnesium stay in your water, so scale is reduced rather than eliminated and the soft-water feel never arrives. There is no salt-free ion exchange

True softening removes hardness, which the USGS defines as dissolved calcium and magnesium, by swapping those ions for sodium on a resin bed, and that resin must be regenerated with salt brine. Every saltless device on the market works differently: most use template-assisted crystallization (TAC) media that converts dissolved minerals into microscopic crystals which stay suspended and flow through rather than sticking to pipes and heating elements. Others use electromagnetic coils or chelation. In all cases the minerals remain in the water, so a hardness test reads the same before and after the unit. That is by design, not a defect.

What changes and what does not

With a well-applied conditioner, new scale forms far more slowly on water heaters, fixtures and appliances, which is the main economic argument for treating hardness at all. What does not change: soap still lathers poorly, spotting on glass and shower doors persists because the minerals still dry on surfaces, laundry feels the same, and skin and hair notice no difference.
