What a 1 micron water filter actually removes

A 1 micron water filter is a mechanical strainer rated to stop particles around one micrometer across, which is far too small to see and small enough to include cysts as well as fine sediment and rust. It is a size specification and nothing more: it says how small a particle the cartridge will stop, and says nothing at all about dissolved contaminants, which pass through regardless of how fine the rating gets.

Nominal and absolute are not the same claim

Two cartridges can both be labelled one micron and perform very differently. A nominal rating means most particles of that size are captured, with the manufacturer choosing what most means, and in practice a nominal cartridge lets a meaningful fraction through. An absolute rating is a tested claim that essentially all particles at the stated size are retained, and it is the one that matters when the target is cysts or when the filter is protecting expensive downstream equipment. If a product sheet gives a micron number with no word attached, treat it as nominal. Certification of the claim against a recognized standard is what turns a number into evidence.

What passes straight through it

Everything dissolved. Hardness minerals, nitrate, fluoride, sodium, dissolved iron, PFAS and chlorine are all in solution rather than suspension, so no mechanical rating stops them, and a one micron cartridge changes none of them. Bacteria are smaller than the rating and generally pass as well, which is why disinfection is a separate stage. What a one micron filter does handle is particulate: silt, fine sand, rust flakes shed by old galvanized pipe, scale fragments, pipe debris after utility work, and the particles that clog aerators and score faucet cartridges. That is a genuinely useful job, but it is a narrow one.

Pressure drop and why staging matters

The finer the filter the faster it loads, and a one micron cartridge fitted as the only filter on dirty water will clog quickly and take household pressure down with it. The standard fix is staging: a coarse spin-down separator or a coarser cartridge first to take the bulk of the load, then the fine cartridge to polish. Each stage protects the next and the fine element lasts much longer. Size the housing generously as well, because a large diameter cartridge presents more surface area for the same flow, which means lower pressure drop and longer intervals. Pressure gauges before and after tell you when to change it, which is far better than guessing.

Iron, staining and what filtration can reach

Iron is where the mechanical limits become obvious. Penn State Extension notes that iron and manganese carry secondary, aesthetic standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese, and that oxidized iron fouls softener resin. Oxidized iron is particulate, so a fine sediment filter will catch it and will visibly load with rust color. Dissolved iron in clear water straight from the well is not particulate at all and passes through every cartridge you own, only turning orange in the toilet tank once it meets air. Questions people ask about 1 micron water filter

Does a 1 micron filter remove bacteria?

No. Bacteria are generally smaller than the rating and pass through. Removing or inactivating them needs ultraviolet treatment, chlorination or a membrane rated for microbiological reduction.

What is the difference between nominal and absolute 1 micron?

Will a 1 micron filter reduce my water pressure?
