Backwashing is the cycle where a treatment tank reverses the direction of flow, pushing water up through the media bed instead of down through it. The bed lifts and fluidizes, trapped dirt is carried out to a drain, and the media resettles ready to work again. It is the reason a media filter can keep running for years without anyone opening the tank.
What happens during a backwash
In normal service, water enters the top of the tank, travels down through the media and leaves through a riser tube at the bottom. During a backwash the control valve reverses that path: water enters the riser, flows upward and expands the bed, breaking up the compacted layer of captured solids at the top. The dirty water leaves through the drain line, then a short down-flow rinse settles the bed and returns the valve to service.
Which systems backwash and which regenerate
Sediment media filters, carbon tanks and iron filters backwash to clean themselves and nothing more. A water softener does something related but different: it regenerates, drawing brine from the salt tank to strip hardness minerals off the resin, with backwash and rinse steps around that brine draw. If someone says their softener is backwashing, they normally mean the whole regeneration cycle.
The drain line and the water it uses
Every backwashing system needs a drain connection that can accept the flow, and it must be installed with an air gap so nothing can siphon back into the tank. Backwash uses treated or raw water and sends it to waste, which is why systems are scheduled to run at night on a timer or a meter. A drain line that is too long, too narrow or kinked starves the cycle and the bed never fully lifts.

Beds channel when they are never properly fluidized, so water carves a path and bypasses most of the media.
