What demin water is and where the shorthand comes from

Demin water is trade shorthand for demineralized water, which is water that has had its dissolved mineral ions removed by ion exchange resins rather than by boiling. The abbreviation turns up in industrial and laboratory contexts far more than in domestic ones, and it describes a specific product with a specific limitation.

How it is made

Two resin beds do the work. A cation resin exchanges positive ions, calcium, magnesium and sodium among them, for hydrogen. An anion resin exchanges negative ions, chloride, sulfate and bicarbonate, for hydroxide. Those two combine into more water, so the dissolved salts are effectively replaced by water itself. Mixed bed units combine both resins for a higher purity finish. The resins are consumed in proportion to what was dissolved in the feed and are regenerated with acid and caustic or replaced.

The limitation that defines it

Ion exchange removes only what carries an electrical charge. Uncharged dissolved organic compounds pass through, particulates pass through, and bacteria and viruses pass through. So demin water can read almost zero on a conductivity meter, which is the usual purity measure, while being microbiologically unsuitable. That is why it is not sold or handled as a drinking water product and why resin beds that sit wet and unused become a growth habitat rather than a sterile one.

Where it is used

Boiler feed and steam raising, where minerals would scale the tubes. Cooling systems for the same reason. Laboratory work, where ionic contamination would interfere with results. Battery topping up. Cosmetic and pharmaceutical manufacture. Automotive and industrial rinsing where drying without marks matters. In every case the requirement is the absence of ions specifically rather than sterility, which is exactly what ion exchange provides and exactly what it does not.

Cost, and the domestic equivalent

Resin capacity is consumed in proportion to feed hardness, so on hard water the cost per volume climbs steeply and softening the feed first is standard practice where volume matters. The USGS classes water above 180 mg/L as calcium carbonate as very hard, which exhausts a cartridge quickly. Domestically the visible use is spot free rinsing for cars and windows, and for drinking water reverse osmosis achieves a comparable result far more cheaply.
