A whole house water filter and softener system pairs two different jobs on the same main line: the filter takes out sediment, chlorine, taste and iron, and the softener removes the calcium and magnesium that scale your pipes and appliances. Neither does the other's work, and the order they are plumbed in decides how long both last.
Two problems, two machines
A filter is a barrier or an adsorber: sediment media catch particles, carbon adsorbs chlorine, taste and organics, and oxidizing media convert dissolved iron into something filterable. A softener is an ion exchanger: it swaps sodium for calcium and magnesium on a bed of resin and regenerates itself with brine. That is why a carbon filter never stops scale and a softener never fixes chlorine taste. Anything sold as a combined system is these two functions in one skid or two tanks side by side, not a single technology doing both.
Which one goes first
The general rule is that the filter goes ahead of the softener. Sediment would otherwise foul the resin bed, and on city water carbon ahead of the softener strips chlorine that would slowly degrade the resin. On well water the priority is stronger still: oxidized iron coats resin and permanently reduces its capacity, so iron treatment must come before the softener rather than after. The exception is where a very fine polishing filter is used for drinking water only, which sits at the point of use downstream of everything else.
What the installation needs
Plan for a bypass loop around the whole assembly with isolation valves on each unit, so either can be serviced without shutting off the house. The softener needs a drain with an air gap and a power outlet, and any backwashing filter needs the same. Allow floor space for the softener's brine tank alongside the resin tank, and clearance above the tanks to lift the control valves for service. Position the assembly on the cold main ahead of the water heater, and leave a sampling tap between the filter and the softener so you can test each stage on its own.
Salt based or salt free in a combined system
Combined systems are sold with either a conventional salt based softener or a salt free conditioner. A salt based unit removes hardness, so treated water tests soft and scale genuinely stops. A conditioner changes how the hardness minerals crystallize so they are less likely to stick, but the minerals stay in the water and hardness still measures the same. Conditioners need no salt, no drain and no power, which is why they appear in combined packages for apartments and for households on a septic system with restrictions on brine discharge.
Sizing and running it
Size both units to the same peak flow, since the assembly is only as fast as its slowest component, and match the softener's grain capacity to your measured hardness and household use. Add iron to that load calculation on well water. Once running, the routine is simple: keep the brine tank fed, change or backwash the filter media on schedule, and test a treated tap for hardness and chlorine occasionally to prove each stage is still working. Should the water filter go before or after the softener?
Before, in almost every case. Sediment, chlorine and especially oxidized iron all damage or foul softener resin, so filtering first protects the more expensive component.
Can one tank do both filtering and softening?
Some units layer media above resin in a single tank, but they compromise both jobs and complicate replacement. Separate tanks in series are the more serviceable arrangement.
Do I need a softener if I already have a whole house filter?
If your water is hard, yes. Carbon and sediment filters do not remove calcium and magnesium, so scale on the heater, kettle and fixtures continues unchanged.
