A whole house charcoal filter is a tank of activated carbon plumbed into the main line where water enters the building, so every tap, shower and appliance gets treated water. Charcoal is the everyday word for activated carbon, and its job is chlorine, chloramine, taste, odor and a broad range of organic compounds. It is the standard first purchase for a household on city water that dislikes how the water tastes and smells.

Tank media, not a cartridge

The whole-house form of carbon is a bed of granular media in a fiberglass tank, sized in cubic feet, rather than a cartridge in a housing. Volume is what gives it capacity and low pressure drop at household flow rates, which a cartridge cannot match on a whole house. Some tanks backwash on a timer to lift and rinse the bed and prevent channeling; upflow designs fluidize the bed in normal service instead and use no backwash water at all. Both work, and the choice usually comes down to drain access.

What it removes and what it ignores

Carbon reliably takes out free chlorine, taste and odor compounds, and many organic chemicals including disinfection byproducts. A catalytic carbon variant is what handles chloramine, the combined chlorine most large utilities now use, and ordinary carbon does that job poorly. What carbon does not do is soften water, remove nitrate, fluoride, arsenic or dissolved sodium, or kill bacteria. Households often expect scale to stop after installing one and are disappointed, because hardness passes straight through.

Sizing it to your plumbing, not your house

The number that matters is peak flow in gallons per minute, driven by fixture count and service line size, not by square footage. Undersize the tank and you get a pressure complaint in the shower whenever the washing machine fills, and the contact time drops so the carbon underperforms as well. Oversizing costs money and space but harms nothing. Where a softener is also present, the carbon tank normally goes first so the softener resin is protected from chlorine, which shortens resin life.

Media life and replacement

Carbon is not cleaned, it is exhausted: the adsorption sites fill and the bed stops working, usually without any visible change. Life depends on the chlorine load and the water used, and it is measured in years rather than months on a residential tank. The tell-tale is the return of chlorine taste and smell.
