Sediment first, always, since grit damages valve seals and blinds carbon. Then carbon, which removes chlorine, and here it is doing two jobs: improving the water and protecting the resin behind it, because chlorine degrades softener resin over time. Then the softener. On well water, iron and manganese treatment goes ahead of the softener too, since oxidized iron fouls resin rather than passing through it. Some installations put carbon after the softener to polish, which is defensible where resin protection is not the priority.

Judging a single tank combination unit

These exist and some are good. The questions to ask are what media it contains and in what volume, whether the carbon portion is sized for the flow the house draws, whether the resin volume matches a proper sizing calculation for your hardness and use, and how the regeneration cycle serves both. Be wary of stage counts used in place of volumes. A combination unit that is really a softener with a token carbon layer will disappoint on chlorine, and one on chloraminated water needs catalytic carbon specifically.

Sizing and the practicalities

Size the softener from measured hardness, household water use and any iron, and size the filtration from peak simultaneous flow. Both need space near the point of entry, and the softener needs a drain connection with an air gap and a power supply. Fit isolation valves and a whole system bypass so either can be serviced.
