How conditioning works, without the marketing
The mainstream salt-free conditioners use template-assisted crystallization: media that encourages dissolved hardness minerals to form microscopic crystals that stay suspended in the water instead of plating onto pipes and heating elements. No salt, no brine discharge, no drain connection, minimal maintenance beyond periodic media replacement. What it does not do is remove the minerals, which is why USGS's definition matters here: hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, and after conditioning both are still in the water.
What a conditioner fixes, and what it leaves
Scale protection is the honest claim: water heaters, tankless units and fixtures accumulate less hard scale on conditioned water, which is the main economic damage hardness does. What conditioning leaves untouched is everything that comes from the minerals being present: soap that lathers poorly, spotting on glassware as water dries, and the feel of hard water on skin and laundry. If those are your complaints, only ion exchange addresses them, because only ion exchange takes the minerals out.
Choosing between conditioner and softener
Choose by complaint and by constraints. Scale on the heater and fixtures, a dislike of salt handling, a septic system you would rather not send brine to, or a jurisdiction restricting softener discharge: those all point to a conditioner. Does a water conditioner need salt or a drain?
No. Salt-free conditioners have no brine tank and no regeneration cycle, so they need no salt bags and no drain line. That simplicity is a large part of their appeal for garages, closets and slab homes.
Will conditioned water still spot my glassware?
Usually yes, because the minerals that leave spots as water evaporates are still present. Conditioning targets scale formation on surfaces in contact with flowing water, not the residue left when droplets dry.
Can I run a conditioner on well water?
Yes, with a caveat: iron and manganese foul conditioning media just as they foul softener resin, so wells with metals need those treated first. Test the well before choosing, and put iron removal ahead of the conditioner.
