Water softeners without salt are a shelf, not a technology. The category covers template assisted crystallization media, catalytic and electrically powered descalers, and a handful of magnetic devices with very different evidence behind them. What is in the tank

The mainstream salt free unit is a tank of template assisted crystallization media. Water passes over ceramic beads whose surface presents nucleation sites, and dissolved hardness converts to microscopic crystals that stay in suspension and travel out with the water. No ions are exchanged, nothing is captured, and nothing regenerates, so the unit needs no drain, no brine tank, no electricity and no salt deliveries. It is a pressure vessel with media in it and no control valve, which is also why there is very little to go wrong.

What performance looks like on paper and in the shower

The USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, with soft water up to 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate and very hard water above 180 mg/L. A salt free unit does not move that number: test after it and you will read what you read before it. What changes is behavior, because scale largely stops adhering inside the water heater and on fixtures. Soap lather, soap scum, spotting on glassware and the feel of the water are all consequences of the minerals being present, so those complaints generally persist and a conventional softener is the honest recommendation for them.

The conditions these units need

Salt free media is fussier about its feed water than a softener is. Iron and manganese coat the media surface and take the nucleation sites out of service, so an iron problem has to be dealt with upstream. Chlorine shortens media life on a municipal supply, which is why a carbon stage usually leads. Sediment blinds the bed. Very high hardness pushes the technology past what it manages well. In practice that means the same water test you would do for a softener, and often the same prefiltration in front of the tank.

Sizing, installation and what upkeep remains

Sizing is on flow rate rather than on hardness and household size, because there is no capacity being consumed between regenerations. Get the flow rating right and pressure holds when several fixtures run; get it wrong and the house feels starved. Installation is a simple in and out connection with a bypass, no drain and no outlet, so utility room siting is easy. Maintenance is the prefilter changes and a media replacement after several years.
