Smelly well water is a symptom with at least half a dozen causes, and the cure for one makes no difference to another. Before buying equipment, work out three things: whether the smell is on hot water, cold water or both, whether it is at one fixture or every fixture, and whether it survives in a glass carried outside.
Three checks that narrow it down fast
First, run the cold tap at the fixture nearest the pressure tank and smell it, then run the hot. A smell that appears only on hot water is almost always the water heater, not the well. Second, check every fixture. One bad sink usually means a fouled drain or an aerator, and the classic test is to fill a glass, carry it into another room and smell it there. If the water is fine away from the sink, you were smelling the drain. Third, note whether the smell fades after running the tap for several minutes, which points at stagnation in the plumbing rather than at the aquifer.
Rotten eggs: sulfur, bacteria or the heater
The rotten egg smell is hydrogen sulfide. In a well it comes either from geology, from sulfate-reducing bacteria living in the well and plumbing, or from the reaction between a magnesium anode rod and sulfate in a water heater tank. The heater version is the cheapest fix by far and shows up only on hot water. When cold water smells too, the gas is arriving with the supply and needs oxidation: air injection, chlorine or peroxide feed, or ozone, followed by a filter that catches what the oxidation created. Carbon alone strips a whisper of sulfide and gives up quickly on anything stronger.
Musty, metallic, oily and sewage smells
A musty, earthy or moldy smell often means iron or sulfur bacteria colonizing the well and forming slime, or surface water and decaying organic matter reaching the casing. A metallic taste and smell with orange or black staining points at iron and manganese: Penn State Extension notes these carry secondary, aesthetic standards with recommended maximums of 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese, so they are nuisance problems rather than acute ones. A sewage or septic smell demands urgent bacteriological testing, because it can mean a septic field, a flooded well pit or a failed sanitary seal is reaching the water.
Choosing treatment once you know the cause
Sulfide from geology responds to an oxidizer plus filtration, sized to how strong the odor is. Bacterial slime usually needs shock chlorination of the well and plumbing first, then continuous treatment if it returns, because shocking alone rarely holds. Iron and manganese need oxidation and an iron filter, with the media chosen by pH. Organic contamination from surface water is a well construction problem: fix the casing, cap and grading before buying any equipment. Questions people ask about smelly well water
Why does only my hot water smell?
That is nearly always the water heater. A magnesium anode rod reacting with sulfate in the tank, often with sulfate-reducing bacteria present, produces hydrogen sulfide that never appears in the cold line.
Will a carbon filter fix a sulfur smell?
Only for very light odor, and not for long. Carbon has limited capacity for hydrogen sulfide, so most wells need oxidation with air, chlorine, peroxide or ozone before any filtration stage.
Is smelly well water dangerous to drink?
The common nuisance odors from sulfide, iron and manganese are aesthetic rather than acute hazards, but a sewage or septic smell is a warning sign and calls for immediate bacteriological testing.
Does shock chlorination cure the smell permanently?
Sometimes, when the source really was bacterial colonization. If the smell returns within weeks or months, the bacteria are re-establishing and you need continuous treatment rather than repeat shocking.
