A softener and a filter solve different problems and most houses that need one eventually want both. The softener removes hardness so scale stops forming; the filter removes chlorine, sediment and the chemicals behind taste and smell. Getting good service from the pair is mostly about installing them in the right order and sizing each for the whole house flow rather than for one fixture.
Order of stages, and why it matters
Water should meet the coarsest problem first. Sediment comes off at the front so grit never reaches anything expensive. Iron and sulfur treatment, where a well needs it, comes next. Carbon follows, taking chlorine out before it reaches the softener resin, because chlorine slowly degrades that resin. The softener sits last of the whole house stages, and the treated line then runs to the water heater. Reversing carbon and softener is the single most common mistake and it quietly shortens resin life.
Two tanks or one combined cabinet
Separate tanks let you size and service each stage independently, replace media on its own schedule, and add a stage later without replacing everything. Combined cabinets put softening resin and filtration media in one housing with a single control valve, which saves floor space and one set of plumbing connections. The trade is flexibility: when one media type wears out you usually service the whole bed, and the combined unit is sized as a package rather than tuned stage by stage.
Sizing for the house, not the faucet
Whole house equipment has to pass peak flow without collapsing pressure, so add up the fixtures that realistically run at once: two showers, a washing machine, a dishwasher. The softener is sized separately on grain capacity, driven by measured hardness, household size and any iron present, which together set how often it regenerates. Manufacturers publish softeners in capacity steps with service flow ratings and filters with their own flow ratings, and both numbers have to clear your peak demand.
Well water changes the specification
Softener resin can handle a limited amount of dissolved iron. Penn State Extension notes that softeners can remove dissolved iron when pH is above 6.7, hardness is 3 to 20 grains per gallon and dissolved iron is under 5 mg/L, and that oxidized iron fouls resin. In practice that means a well with visible orange staining needs a dedicated oxidizing iron filter ahead of the softener, and a bacteriologically suspect well needs ultraviolet treatment after everything else. Living with the pair
The softener needs salt kept topped up and the brine tank checked for a crust bridging across the middle. The filter needs either cartridge changes or, if it is a backwashing tank, a drain line that can take the backwash volume without flooding anything. Both need a bypass valve so the house keeps water while either is serviced, and both should be installed downstream of any outside hose bibs you would rather not soften or filter for the garden.
