How ion exchange softening works
Hard water passes through a tank of resin beads charged with sodium ions. Calcium and magnesium stick to the resin, sodium releases into the water, and the water leaving the tank is soft. When the resin fills up, the control valve draws brine from the salt tank, flushes the captured minerals to the drain, recharges the beads and returns to service. The whole cycle is automatic; your job is keeping salt in the brine tank and letting the valve do its schedule.
Salt-based versus salt-free, honestly
A salt-based softener removes hardness: the minerals leave the water, so soap lathers, scale stops accumulating and existing film gradually washes away. A salt-free conditioner leaves the minerals in the water but converts them into a crystal form less inclined to stick to surfaces, which reduces scale without producing genuinely soft water. Conditioners need no salt, no drain and no regeneration, which is their appeal. If you want measurably soft water, buy the softener; if you mainly want less scale with zero upkeep, the conditioner is the trade.
Sizing from your actual hardness number
Sizing starts with a measured hardness figure. The USGS grades hardness as calcium carbonate: soft at 0 to 60 mg/L, moderately hard at 61 to 120, hard at 121 to 180, very hard above that, and the hard and very hard bands are where softeners earn their keep. Convert your number to grains per gallon, multiply by household daily water use, and pick the capacity step that regenerates every few days rather than daily. The unit belongs on the main line where water enters the home, in a frost-free space with a drain for regeneration discharge and an outlet for the valve. Does softened water taste salty?

Do whole home softeners also filter the water?
No. Ion exchange removes hardness minerals, not chlorine, sediment or other contaminants. Pair the softener with a carbon or sediment filter if your water needs filtration too.
