A whole home water softener and filtration system pairs two different machines: a filter that removes chlorine, sediment or iron, and a softener that removes the hardness minerals behind scale. Homes buy both when they have both problems, which is common. The design questions are order, sizing and whether to buy one combined unit or two matched stages, and all three are answered by your water, not the catalog.
Two problems, two machines
Filtration and softening are different mechanisms solving different complaints. Filters strain particles, adsorb chlorine and tastes, or oxidize and capture iron; none of that touches hardness, because hardness is dissolved calcium and magnesium, which the USGS grades from soft below 60 mg/L as calcium carbonate up to very hard above the 180 mark. Softeners remove exactly those minerals by ion exchange and nothing else. A home with chlorine taste and scaled fixtures, or iron stains and spotted glassware, genuinely has two problems, and honest vendors sell the pair rather than pretending one tank does both.
The order the stages go in
On city water the filter stands first: carbon strips the chlorine before it reaches the softener, which matters because chlorine degrades softening resin over time, so the filter is protecting the softener as well as the showers. On a well the same logic scales up: sediment filtration first, iron treatment where the test demands it, then the softener on clean, iron-managed water, then any polishing stage. In every arrangement the principle is identical: each stage protects the more sensitive one behind it, and the softener's resin is the thing most worth protecting.
Combo units versus separate stages
Combined cabinet systems put filtration media and softening resin into one footprint, which saves floor space and simplifies buying, at the cost of the stages sharing one valve and one service life. Separate matched stages cost more floor space and plumbing but let each component be sized, serviced and eventually replaced on its own schedule. Sizing the pair from one water test

Peak household flow, the showers-plus-laundry moment, sets the minimum flow rating both stages must clear so the pair never throttles the house. Buying the system before the test inverts the logic and usually buys the wrong size of the wrong thing.
