Read the performance claim, not the product page headline

Vendors describe media capability in general terms and document actual performance in a separate data sheet. What you want is a sheet that names fluoride specifically, states the model number the test applies to, names the standard the test was run under, and gives the capacity in gallons at which the claim expires. A claim attached to a media type rather than a model is not a claim about the product you are buying. If no such sheet exists for the exact model, treat the fluoride reduction as unproven regardless of how the listing is worded.

Establish a baseline before installation

Test your untreated water for fluoride before the equipment arrives. Without that number you have nothing to compare against, and a post-installation reading on its own tells you very little. Reverse osmosis membranes decline more gradually but equally invisibly. There is no indicator light that measures anything; the ones fitted are timers. Write the installation date on the housing in permanent marker, keep the capacity figure with the paperwork, set a calendar reminder ahead of the interval, and treat the retest as part of the running cost rather than an optional extra.

Questions worth asking the vendor

Ask which model the fluoride claim covers, what capacity in gallons it holds for, what happens to performance as the media approaches that capacity, whether the claim assumes a particular feed concentration, and which replacement part number you will be buying. Ask whether the system is affected by feed pressure or temperature. A vendor who answers those precisely is selling engineering; one who redirects to testimonials is selling something else.
