Choosing a water filter to remove fluoride from tap water

Fluoride is one of the few common targets that ordinary household filtration ignores completely. A pitcher, a faucet cartridge and a whole house carbon tank will not reduce it meaningfully, because carbon adsorbs organic molecules and fluoride is a small charged ion. Three technologies do work, and each has a different place in the house and a different running cost.

First, find out whether it is even there

Many supplies are fluoridated and many are not, and some groundwater carries fluoride naturally without anyone adding it. The EPA notes that every community water system publishes an annual Consumer Confidence Report and maintains a finder for those reports, and that report states whether fluoride is added and what was measured. Households on a private well need a laboratory test, since naturally occurring fluoride is invisible and varies by aquifer. Establishing the answer costs nothing on a municipal supply and prevents buying equipment for a problem that is not present.

Reverse osmosis, the usual household answer

A reverse osmosis membrane rejects fluoride along with most other dissolved material, which makes an under sink system the common and practical route. It treats drinking and cooking water at the point of use, needs no special media handling, and deals with a long list of other contaminants at the same time. The trade offs are the ones RO always carries: a reject stream to drain, cabinet space for the stack and tank, and cartridge changes. For most households wanting fluoride reduction, this is the straightforward answer.

Activated alumina and bone char

Activated alumina is the media used where fluoride specifically is the target, including at community scale. It adsorbs fluoride onto its surface and is used as a cartridge or a tank, with performance sensitive to pH and to contact time, and with a capacity that is exhausted silently. Bone char is a traditional media that works similarly and is chosen by some households on preference. Both need the flow rate kept low enough for contact, both need replacement on a measured schedule rather than on appearance, and neither is a general purpose filter.

What does not work, and where to fit what does

Activated carbon on its own does not remove fluoride, whatever a product page implies about multi stage filtration. A softener does not: ion exchange for hardness does not target fluoride. Boiling concentrates it, since the water leaves and the fluoride stays. Because ingestion is the exposure route that matters, point of use treatment at the kitchen tap is normally sufficient and far cheaper than treating every gallon entering the house.
