Why the filter you already own does not touch it
Adsorption, the mechanism behind a carbon block or a granular carbon pitcher, relies on molecules sticking to a vast porous surface. It works beautifully on chlorine, on the compounds behind musty or chemical tastes, and on many organic contaminants. Fluoride does not behave that way: it is a small, charged, highly soluble ion that stays dissolved and passes through carbon essentially untouched. The three technologies that do work
Reverse osmosis is the most common household answer: a semi-permeable membrane rejects dissolved ions broadly, so fluoride goes to the drain with the rest of the dissolved load, and an under-sink or countertop unit brings that to one tap. Activated alumina is a specialized adsorbent media that has a genuine affinity for fluoride, sold as cartridges and as tank media, and its performance depends heavily on contact time and on the pH of the water passing through it. Distillation boils the water and condenses the steam, leaving dissolved minerals including fluoride behind in the chamber, at the cost of slow output and electricity. Bone char carbon is a fourth option with real but variable capacity.
Point of use is usually the right scale
Fluoride matters for what you drink and cook with, not for what goes through the shower and the washing machine, so a filter at one tap is normally the sensible scale. That is fortunate, because treating the whole house for fluoride is expensive: reverse osmosis at the point of entry needs a large membrane array, a storage tank and a pump, and a whole-house activated alumina tank needs enough media volume to give proper contact time at full house flow. Find out what you are actually dealing with
Before buying anything, establish whether fluoride is present and at what level, because that decides both the technology and how much media capacity you need. Every community water system in the US must publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report, and the EPA maintains a finder for them, so a utility customer can read the reported figure rather than guessing whether the supply is fluoridated. Well owners have no such report and need a laboratory test, which is worth ordering as a panel rather than a single parameter since the same sample can answer several questions.
