An ozone water treatment system generates ozone gas on site and injects it into the water to oxidize what is dissolved in it. On a household well that usually means turning dissolved iron and manganese into filterable particles, destroying hydrogen sulfide and its rotten-egg smell, and knocking down bacteria without adding a stored chemical to the house.
How ozone treats water
An ozone generator passes dry air or oxygen through an electrical discharge, producing an unstable gas that is injected into the water stream or into a contact tank. Ozone is a powerful oxidizer, so it reacts quickly with dissolved metals and sulfide, converting them from invisible dissolved forms into solid particles and odorless compounds. It also breaks down rapidly, leaving no lasting residual in the plumbing. That short life is both the appeal and the limitation: nothing is stored, nothing has to be handled, and nothing protects the water once it has left the contact tank.
What a complete installation includes
An ozone system is never just the generator. It needs a way to introduce the gas, usually a venturi injector or a diffuser, and a contact tank that holds the water long enough for the reaction to finish. Downstream it needs a filter to take out everything the ozone just turned into particles, typically a backwashing media tank. Many installs also include a vent to handle undissolved gas at the top of the tank. Skip the contact time or the filter and you get the worst of both: oxidized iron carried into the house, staining fixtures and fouling anything with resin in it.
Where ozone is the right choice
Ozone earns its place on wells with combined problems: iron plus sulfur plus a bacteriological concern, where a single oxidizing step handles all three. It suits owners who do not want to store or refill a chemical, and situations where a chlorine taste in the house would be unwelcome. It is less compelling where the only issue is hardness, which ozone does nothing about, or where the water is simply unpleasant tasting city water, which carbon handles far more cheaply. It is also a more mechanically involved system than a cartridge filter, with a generator, injector and tank to maintain.
Test before you specify anything
Ozone systems are sized to the load, so the design depends on knowing what is in the water and how much of it. This matters more on wells than anywhere else. The EPA notes that private wells are not federally regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and that a USGS study of 2,100 private wells found about one in five carried at least one contaminant above a human-health benchmark. Questions people ask about ozone water treatment system
Does an ozone system replace a water softener?
No. Ozone oxidizes metals and sulfide but does nothing to calcium and magnesium, so a hard water problem still needs a softener.
Is any ozone left in the water at the tap?
Very little. Ozone breaks down quickly, which is why a contact tank is required and why no lasting residual protects the plumbing downstream.
Do I still need a filter after the ozone stage?
Yes. Ozone converts dissolved iron and manganese into particles, and those particles must be filtered out or they will stain fixtures and foul resin.
