Some households also run a separate unsoftened or reverse osmosis line to the kitchen cold tap for drinking, which is a preference rather than a necessity. Drain, power, space: the three site requirements
Regeneration flushes brine down a drain, so the system needs one within reach: a floor drain, standpipe, laundry tub or properly air-gapped connection, with the air gap being the code point inspectors actually check. The control valve needs a standard outlet. And the two tanks need footprint plus working clearance: room to pour salt bags into the brine tank without gymnastics and to reach the valve head for service. Does a whole house softening system need electricity and a drain?
A conventional salt-based system needs both: the valve runs the regeneration cycle on power, and the brine discharge needs a drain with an air gap. If the natural install spot has neither, budget for adding them or consider a salt-free conditioner, which needs neither but conditions rather than softens.
Should the softener go before or after the water heater?
Before, always. Protecting the heater from scale is one of the main returns on the system, and a softener plumbed after the heater would treat only cold lines while leaving the most scale-prone appliance in the house on hard water.

Garages are the most common location in slab-built homes, and they work well if the equipment is protected from freezing.
