Reverse osmosis is the most capable treatment a household can fit at a single tap, and the reasons not to fit one are equally concrete. What it does better than anything else
A membrane rejects most dissolved material rather than adsorbing selected compounds, which is why the range of contaminants it addresses is far wider than a carbon filter's: dissolved salts, metals, nitrate, fluoride, arsenic in its charged form, and a long list of others, alongside particles and organisms too large to pass. For a household with a laboratory result naming something specific, it is very often the one piece of equipment that covers it. It also ends bottled water buying, which for some households is the whole economic case.
The reject stream and the running cost
Every system sends a concentrate stream to drain while it produces, and that stream is functional rather than wasteful: it is what carries rejected material off the membrane. At a kitchen tap the volume is modest. Prefilters are replaced annually and a membrane every few years, and neither is expensive, but they are not optional: a system with old prefilters is quietly damaging its own membrane. Whole house reverse osmosis multiplies the reject and the cost, which is a different decision entirely.
Taste, minerals and plumbing
The membrane removes the minerals that give water its taste along with everything else, so fresh permeate tastes flat and is slightly acidic. A remineralization cartridge fixes both for a small cost and is worth fitting from the start. Demineralized water is also mildly aggressive to metals, which matters little on a short tubing run to a dedicated faucet and matters a great deal at whole house scale, where blending or remineralization becomes part of the design.
Space, installation and scope
A conventional system needs cabinet room for a filter stack and a tank, a tee into the cold feed, a drain connection and a hole for a separate faucet. Countertop and tankless designs trade capacity or bench space for avoiding some of that. And the scope is one tap: showers, laundry and appliances are untouched, so a household whose complaint is scale needs a softener instead and one whose complaint is chlorine smell needs carbon.
