A backwash cycle looks like one event and is a sequence of distinct steps, each with its own purpose and its own failure. Knowing what the valve is doing at each moment turns watching a cycle from a formality into the most useful diagnostic available on a media filter, because every step produces a visible signal at the drain.
Backwash: lift and carry away
The valve reverses the flow so water enters at the bottom and rises through the bed, lifting and fluidizing the media so trapped material is released and carried out to drain. This is where the flow rate matters: too little and the bed never lifts, so dirt stays put and the media slowly packs. Watch the drain during this step, which should run visibly dirty and then progressively clear. Water that runs clear from the start usually means the bed is not fluidizing at all.
Rinse: settle and classify
After the lift, a rinse step sends water down through the bed at service direction to settle it back into place. On a layered bed this is when the media reclassifies by density, coarse on top and fine below, which is what restores the graded structure. Too short a rinse and the bed goes back into service unsettled, which shows up as fines and sediment appearing at the taps shortly after every cycle. That is one of the most recognisable symptoms in this whole area.
Regeneration steps where the media needs them
Media that works chemically rather than mechanically has extra steps. A softener draws brine through the resin and then rinses it out slowly, then refills the brine tank for next time. An oxidizing filter may draw a regenerant solution. Those draw steps depend on a venturi injector, which is the component that blocks with fines and grit, and a failed draw means the cycle completes on schedule while the media is never actually recharged.
How to watch a cycle and what to note
Run a manual cycle with a bucket or a clear view of the drain. Time each step. Note when the water changes from dirty to clear, whether the drain flow is strong and steady, and whether any media appears in the discharge, which means the bed is being over fluidized or a distributor has failed.
