Membrane cleaner: what it fixes and what it cannot

A membrane cleaner is a chemical wash circulated through a reverse osmosis element to lift the deposits slowing it down. It is worth doing on larger systems where a replacement element is expensive, and it is worth understanding first, because cleaning recovers fouling and does nothing at all for a membrane that has been chemically damaged.

Acid or alkaline, and why it matters

Cleaners come in two families and they are not interchangeable. Low pH acid cleaners dissolve mineral scale and metal oxides. High pH alkaline cleaners lift organic matter, biofilm and silt. Using the wrong one first can make things worse: an acid wash on a biologically fouled element can set the deposit harder. Diagnose the fouling from the symptoms and the feed water before you choose the chemistry.

Reading the symptoms

Scale usually announces itself as falling product flow with rejection holding up reasonably well, and it is likely where the feed carries hardness. The USGS defines hardness as dissolved calcium and magnesium, at soft up to 60 mg/L, moderately hard 61 to 120, hard 121 to 180 and very hard above that, and the harder the feed the sooner scaling appears. Biological fouling tends to show rising pressure drop across the element with a slower slide in flow. Iron fouling stains the element visibly. Penn State Extension notes that oxidized iron fouls softener resin, and the same oxidized iron blinds a membrane surface.

How the wash is actually done

Cleaning means circulating the solution through the element at low pressure and moderate flow, so it washes the surface rather than being pushed through it. Solution is recirculated from a tank, soaked for a period, then flushed thoroughly to drain before the system returns to service. The first volume of water made afterwards is discarded. On a small under-sink cartridge membrane, none of this is practical or economic, and replacement is the sensible route.

What cleaning will never recover

Chlorine and chloramine oxidize thin film composite membranes and that damage is permanent: no cleaner restores rejection once the film is attacked. The same goes for a membrane physically torn by a pressure surge or by grit that got past a failed prefilter. If rejection has collapsed rather than drifted, suspect damage and replace. If flow has drifted down over months while rejection held, suspect fouling and clean. Sorting those two apart before ordering chemicals saves both the money and the weekend.

Can I clean a household under-sink RO membrane?

Technically yes, but the equipment and chemicals cost more than the element. For point-of-use systems, replacement is almost always the better decision.

How do I know whether to use an acid or alkaline cleaner?

Match it to the fouling: acid for mineral scale and metal oxides, alkaline for biofilm, organics and silt. Where both are present, alkaline usually goes first.

Will a membrane cleaner fix bad tasting water?
