How a countertop unit gets pressure without plumbing

Reverse osmosis needs pressure to push water through the membrane against its own osmotic pressure. An under-sink system borrows that from the house supply. A countertop unit cannot, so it carries an electric booster pump instead, which is why almost every model has a power cord and why they are noticeably louder than a plumbed system. The pump also means these units are not dependent on your incoming line pressure, which is an advantage in homes with weak supply pressure where a standard under-sink system would produce slowly and reject more of the water it is given.

Where the reject water goes

Every RO system produces a concentrate stream that carries away what the membrane rejected. A plumbed system sends it to the drain automatically. Capacity, and where it stops making sense

Countertop machines dispense on demand from a small internal reserve rather than from a pressurized bladder tank, so they suit filling a glass, a bottle or a coffee carafe. Filling a stockpot or a large water dispenser means waiting through several cycles and refilling the feed tank. Footprint matters more than the spec sheet suggests: measure the depth of your worktop and the clearance under the wall cabinets before you buy, because these units are tall.
