What a carbon pre filter protects and where it should sit

A carbon pre filter is carbon media placed ahead of another treatment stage specifically to protect it, rather than to treat the water for its own sake. Understanding it that way answers most of the questions people have about it, because both its position in the train and its replacement interval follow from what it is defending rather than from what comes out of the tap.

What it is protecting

Two things mainly. Reverse osmosis membranes are made of thin film composite material that chlorine destroys quickly, so every RO system has carbon stages ahead of the membrane and a failed one costs a membrane rather than a cartridge. Softener resin is degraded by chlorine over years, so a carbon bed ahead of a softener extends the resin's working life considerably on municipal supplies. In both cases the pre filter is cheap insurance for a component that is expensive and inconvenient to replace.

What must come before it

Sediment. Carbon fouled with grit loses surface area, channels so that water finds a path through with little contact, and blinds off, which raises pressure drop and shortens its life dramatically. So the order is sediment, then carbon, then whatever is being protected. Putting a carbon cartridge first on a supply carrying grit is the most common sequencing mistake, and it shows up as a carbon stage that lasts a fraction of its stated life while the sediment problem it was never meant to handle continues downstream.

Granular carbon or a carbon block

Granular carbon offers lower pressure drop and higher flow at the cost of some channelling risk, which suits whole house duties and larger beds. A carbon block is denser, gives better contact and finer filtration in the same volume, and is standard in cartridge systems and RO pre filtration, at the cost of a higher pressure drop and a shorter life on dirty water. Where chloramine is dosed rather than free chlorine, catalytic carbon is needed in either form, since standard media handles chloramine poorly.

Changing it before it costs you something

Its exhaustion is invisible: no discoloration, no smell, and often no change in taste, because the last of the bed still handles the taste threshold after it has stopped removing the chlorine load. A membrane behind a spent pre filter is being damaged with no symptom until output falls, by which point the membrane is finished.
